Crafted from traditional local red earthenware clay (barro vermelho), this piece is finished in a thick, satin-matte cobalt blue glaze that beautifully contrasts against its rustic, earthen body. It features a dramatically high-arching, baroque-inspired looped handle and a beautifully sculpted, sweeping pinched spout—hallmarks of classic Iberian utility jugs. Perfect as a standalone sculptural accent, a rustic vase for fresh botanical branches, or a bold styling piece for a global-inspired shelf or console.

Measures 12” tall, 10” wide, 8” excluding the handle with a 5” spout opening.

This style of pottery is characteristic of traditional Portuguese terracotta (barro vermelho), a staple of regional folk art and pottery from areas like Alentejo and Barcelos.
The technique relies on specific traditional elements:
• The Red Clay Base: Crafted from local ferruginous clay, providing a distinct earthen weight and rustic terracotta red color visible on the base rim or wherever the paint wears thin.
• Slip or Cobalt Glazing: The vibrant, smooth blue exterior comes from a thick layer of a mineral-pigmented clay slip or leadless glaze—frequently utilizing deep cobalt blues or Mediterranean sky blues—applied directly over the red body prior to firing.
• The "Farval" or Traditional Ewer Silhouette: This specific shape featuring an exaggerated, high-arching baroque-style loop handle and a sweeping, bird-like pinched spout is typical of vintage Portuguese utility water jugs and decorative ewers. See less
