An exceptional and monumental 18th-century French Provincial carved walnut armoire of impressive architectural proportions, distinguished by its extraordinary sculptural ornamentation, beautifully figured walnut, and distinguished provenance from the private collection of Pierre Moulin, founder of the celebrated French country furnishings company Pierre Deux.
This magnificent armoire features an elegantly arched and molded cornice above two substantial paneled doors, richly embellished with elaborate hand-carved rocaille scrollwork, floral sprays, and gracefully shaped reserves. The central stile is adorned with intricately carved grapevines, foliage, and ornamental motifs, demonstrating the remarkable craftsmanship of the provincial cabinetmaker.
Exceptional Carved Crest — Aesop’s Fable of The Fox and the Stork
The most captivating feature of this remarkable armoire is its elaborate sculptural crest, apparently illustrating Aesop’s celebrated fable, The Fox and the Stork.
The beautifully executed carving depicts two animals facing one another across a narrow-necked water vessel, surrounded by a richly carved wreath of oak leaves and acorns.
In the traditional fable, the fox invites the stork to dine but serves the meal in a shallow dish, making it impossible for the long-beaked bird to eat. In retaliation, the stork invites the fox to dinner and serves the food in a tall, narrow-necked vessel, from which the stork can easily eat while the fox cannot.
The moral of the story, “One bad turn deserves another,” serves as a timeless lesson about fairness, hospitality, and the treatment of others.
The unusual narrative composition of the crest, with its prominent narrow-necked vessel, suggests an interpretation of this classical fable. Such storytelling through decorative carving lends the armoire a particularly charming and intellectually engaging character, distinguishing it from more conventional examples of French provincial furniture.
The lower section is equally impressive, featuring an elaborately carved serpentine apron centered by a basket overflowing with grapes and foliage, supported on gracefully shaped cabriole feet.
The armoire retains substantial iron locking hardware and decorative escutcheons. Its warm walnut surface displays attractive grain patterns, rich color variations, and a beautifully developed patina consistent with its considerable age.
