An exceptionally rare set of twelve authentic "Pia" dining chairs, designed in 1959 by Poul Cadovius and manufactured in Denmark. Cadovius, originally trained as a saddler and upholsterer, is one of the most influential designers and entrepreneurs of Danish mid-century design. He gained international renown for his revolutionary, wall-mounted shelving system, the "Royal System," and later led CADO, one of the most important Danish furniture manufacturers of his time. The Pia is considered his most famous chair design. Sets of this size are extremely rare on the vintage market – twelve matching chairs allow for a large, unified dining table, a combination rarely achievable today.
The Pia is an exercise in reduction: Cadovius wanted to create a chair in the spirit of the 1950s, yet lighter and more delicate in weight and expression. The frame tapers towards the ends and is designed without cross braces. Crafted from exquisite walnut and teak, the chairs showcase Cadovius's signature lightness and architectural clarity. The elegantly tapered, sharply defined legs are particularly noteworthy, creating a striking contrast to the softly curved backrest. This combination of graphic rigor and organic form makes the set an outstanding example of Scandinavian mid-century design.
The seats have been expertly and completely rewoven by hand using traditional paper cord, just as in the original design. The walnut has been professionally cleaned, carefully refinished, and relacquered, preserving its original character. The chairs are sturdy, comfortable, and ready for immediate use.
Condition: Very good vintage condition – professionally restored, with newly woven seats and only minimal signs of age-related wear. An extremely rare set from Danish design history in this size.

Exceptionally rare set of twelve original and authentic "Pia" dining chairs, designed in 1959 by Poul Cadovius and produced in Denmark. Originally trained as a saddler and upholsterer, Cadovius became one of the defining designers and entrepreneurs of Danish mid-century design. He gained international recognition with his revolutionary floating wall shelving, the "Royal System", and later became CADO, one of the most important Danish furniture manufacturers of its time. The Pia is considered his best-known chair design. Sets of this size have become extremely hard to find – twelve matching chairs allow for a large, cohesive dining table that is rarely achievable today.
The Pia is an exercise in reduction: Cadovius set out to create a chair in the spirit of the 1950s, yet lighter and more delicate in both weight and expression. The frame tapers towards its ends and is engineered to do without stretchers. Crafted from fine walnut, the chairs reflect Cadovius' signature lightness and architectural clarity. The tapered, sharply defined legs create a striking contrast to the gently curved backrest, combining graphic precision with organic softness – an outstanding example of Scandinavian mid-century design.
The seats have been professionally and completely rewoven by hand using traditional Danish paper cord, true to the original design. The walnut and teak wood frames have been professionally cleaned, carefully refinished and lacquered while preserving their original character. The chairs are sturdy, comfortable and ready for immediate use.
Condition: Very good vintage condition – professionally restored with newly woven seats and only minimal age-related wear. An extremely rare set of Danish design history in this size. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
