A gorgeous, impressive and possibly unique blonde italian modern designer dining or centre table in lovely vintage condition and with maker’s stamp. Made in the 1970s by esteemed italian designer gigi sabadin, this sizeable and strikingly attractive round solid ash wood table can seat up to six and will add gorgeous blonde colouring, stunning woodwork design, superb craftsmanship and a timelessly elegant, sculpturally minimalist aesthetic to any interior.
gigi sabadin (b.1930) was nominated for the world’s oldest and most prestigious industrial design award, the compasso d’oro (golden compass) in 1979. Known for his unconventional approach to design, he combined technology with shape to create functional and timeless works of art. Through his immense understanding of materials, his technical knowledge and artistic vision, he crafted essential, everyday items into iconic pieces in the history of furniture design. His creations effortlessly straddled the modernist and postmodern eras, combining the elegance of classical italian mid-century design principles with the more out-of-the-box, visionary forms of the late 20th century, creating almost ethereal yet timelessly stylish pieces.
reassuringly heavy and made from excellent quality, substantial and beautifully toned solid ash wood, this stunning table exemplifies sabadin’s genius, perfectly displaying his skill as both designer and craftsman. The initial impression of a lovely blonde round table with a three-legged base belies the complex design and craftsmanship required to achieve its creation, and the extraordinary talent of its creator. An oxymoron in a functional work of art, this table is a study in minimalist complexity.
sabadin has created this table based on two shapes, the circle and the triangle – the two most important and fundamental forms of maths, geometry, architecture and design. The genius is in the precision and flawlessness of how the shapes are intertwined, with the circular tabletop emerging from a triptych of interconnecting 15-plank, 2.5cm-thick ‘pie-sections’ of ash wood. Sabadin has shaped and seamlessly interconnected 45 planks of beech wood in three sections (without the use of underbracing!), to create a stunning triptych within a circular form.
and the three-legged base is no less impressive – sculptural, substantial, streamlined and with chamfered ‘shins’, each leg is carved in the middle, allowing them to interlock and load-bear in perfect triangular fashion. The overall effect is a timelessly stylish, functional everyday objet d’art infused with almost other-worldly geometric precision.
all in all this is a fantastic and possibly unique everyday work of art, which will add gorgeous blonde colouring, outstanding quality, design fascination and sculpturally minimalist appeal to any setting. It could be used as a dining or centre table and is photographed here with a set of blonde designer dining chairs.
condition
this incredible dining table is in very good vintage condition. Solid and structurally sound, it has been clearly much-loved and well looked after, having only minor to-be-expected marks and small areas of grazing to the tabletop edging. It has the “gigi sabadin & c. Made in italy” stamp to the underside. Overall it's a fantastic dining or centre table which won’t fail to be a knockout in any setting and if well looked after it should be just as gorgeous and impressive for generations to come – please see the photos.
