An exceptionally elegant and rare two-seater sofa, model "Bastiano," designed by Tobia Scarpa together with Afra Scarpa for Gavina, Italy, around 1960. Tobia Scarpa, son of the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa, and his wife Afra are among the most influential figures in Italian post-war design. The Bastiano is one of their best-known designs and continued to be produced by Knoll after the company's acquisition in 1968. It remains one of the great classics of Italian Mid-Century Modern. The construction follows a clear, architectural principle: a frame made of wide, flat wooden panels forms the sides and back, into which the cushions are loosely inserted. In this way, the sofa combines a strict form with relaxed, generous seating comfort. The frame is crafted from dark mahogany with beautiful reddish hues. The original cushions are upholstered in black vintage leather that has developed a beautiful, elegant patina over the decades. They are supported by the original rubberized springs. The interplay of the warm, deep wood tone and the dark, well-worn leather gives the sofa an exceptional presence and timeless elegance.

Condition: Very good vintage condition – original leather with an even, elegant patina, without stains, tears, or dry spots. The original rubberized springs are intact, the mahogany frame has been restored and is stable with only minimal signs of age-related wear.
