High above the shoreline, a grove of palms crowds a spit of land where a narrow stream slips toward the sea, the trunks lifting into bright green fronds above a dark, wet bank. Water in layered cobalt, cerulean and aqua runs to a pale horizon, with a faint white wake across the surface. The sky fills nearly half the canvas in thin, milky blue, brushed so lightly that the weave shows through. Podolsky's architect's feel for placement and proportion keeps the view steady, with the palms anchoring the lower right and the open water giving the eye somewhere to rest.
The calm blues make this a natural for a bedroom, a sunroom or a living room wall that needs air. Hang it above a low sofa, a white oak console or a pair of rattan chairs. Sand, linen and driftwood tones suit it, and so do crisp white walls and pale aqua accents. At twenty-four by thirty inches it holds a wall without crowding it.
Oil on canvas, 30 x 24 x 1.5 in (76.2 x 61 x 3.8 cm). Signed with initials in the lower corner.
Miguel Podolsky paints in oil on stretched canvas, working from the sketchbook he carries with him and from places he knows. Built in layers of visible brushwork, his contemporary impressionist pictures put light, color and atmosphere first, while an architect's sense of composition and proportion holds each scene together. Strokes stay broad and direct, with thin, scumbled passages in skies and water set against thicker paint in foregrounds. Each canvas carries his monogram, MP, in a lower corner.
Miguel Podolsky is an Argentine-born artist based in California. For more than thirty-five years he worked as an architect, a career that continues to shape his painting through a strong sense of composition, proportion and spatial balance. He is a contemporary impressionist who carries a sketchbook with him and paints whenever there is a chance.
His oil paintings explore light, color and atmosphere across landscapes, seascapes, urban scenes and vintage cars, often finding harmony between the built and natural worlds. Drawing on his South American roots and his many years in the United States, he paints scenes of the California coast, the Caribbean and beyond with a warm, optimistic eye for everyday moments.
