An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Fort Lapwai looks across an open, grassy field to a dense stand of tall trees, with rolling hills behind them under a pale sky. Fort Lapwai was a U.S. Army post founded in 1862 on the Nez Perce Reservation, in what is now northern Idaho. Lapwai is a Nez Perce name, often translated as "place of the butterflies." Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Walla Walla, Umatilla and Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.
From Volume 8, facing page 22. Printed on Japanese vellum, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. The smooth vellum holds the fine detail of the gravure. Titled in the plate lower left (FORT LAPWAI), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 5 1/2 x 7 1/4 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI111606) is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
