An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Nez Percé Canoe shows a dugout canoe, hollowed from a single log, pulled in to a rocky river shore. Its occupant holds a long pole upright at the far end, rounded river stones fill the foreground, and the water stretches back to a low far bank. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Walla Walla, Umatilla and Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes.
From Volume 8, facing page 46. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and part of the paper's Van Gelder Zonen watermark shows in the lower margin. Titled in the plate lower left (NEZ PERCÉ CANOE), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 5 3/8 x 7 1/4 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI111900) is written in pencil on the verso.
