An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Skúthŭn - Klickitat is a close portrait of a Klickitat elder, white hair falling around a deeply lined face and a pale blanket wrapped high around the shoulders, set against a dark ground. The Klickitat are a Sahaptin-speaking people whose homeland lies north of the Columbia River in south-central Washington. Curtis made the photograph in 1910, and it was published in 1911 in Volume 7, which covers the Yakima, the Klickitat, the interior Salish tribes and the Kutenai.
From Volume 7, facing page 34. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (SKÚTHŬN - KLICKITAT), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image.
Image: 7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI2476) is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
