An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Half Moon - Nez Percé is a close portrait of an elder Nez Perce man, his long hair loose around his face and a blanket drawn around his shoulders. Light falls across one side of his face and picks out every line of it, and he looks straight into the camera. Curtis made two portraits of Half Moon for Volume 8; this is the one facing page 28. The photograph dates to 1910, and Volume 8, which covers the Nez Perce, Walla Walla, Umatilla and Cayuse and the Chinookan tribes, was published in 1911.
From Volume 8, facing page 28. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. Titled in the plate lower left (HALF MOON - NEZ PERCÉ), with "From Copyright Photograph 1910 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 7 1/4 x 5 3/8 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI111893) is written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.
