An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. Cañon Hogán shows a Navajo hogan, a domed, earth-covered dwelling with a timber-framed doorway, set in tall grass at the foot of a towering canyon wall. Curtis made the photograph in 1906, and it was published in 1907 in Volume 1, the first volume of the series, which covers the Apache, Jicarilla and Navajo. Curtis used the spelling Navaho; today the name is written Navajo.
From Volume 1, facing page 68. Printed on Japanese gampi tissue, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, and still in its original Holland Van Gelder mount. The thin, smooth tissue holds the fine detail of the gravure and gives it a warm tone. Titled in the plate lower left (CAÑON HOGÁN - NAVAHO), with "From Copyright Photograph 1906 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 5 3/8 x 7 3/8 inches. Sheet: 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI2365) and "V 1" are written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.

A rich, clean impression on the tissue, which lies flat in its original Holland Van Gelder mount, with the plate mark visible. The margins are clean apart from a few tiny spots in the lower margin. The bound edge along the bottom has the original sewing holes and small chips, and near the lower right corner the edge is torn, with a small piece missing and a short lifted flap. All of this sits at the outer edge, well away from the image, where a mat would cover it. A tiny tear of about 1/8 inch at the top edge. Pencil notes on the verso. Sold unframed. less
