An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. The Mohave shows a Mohave man standing on a rock ledge at the edge of the water, seen from behind and to the side, his long hair worn in rolled strands, looking out toward the far shore. Curtis made the photograph in 1907, and it was published in 1908 in Volume 2, which covers the Mohave, Yuma, Pima, Papago, Maricopa and neighboring peoples of the Southwest. Curtis used the spelling Mohave; today the name is usually written Mojave.
From Volume 2, facing page 48. Printed on Holland Van Gelder, the heavy Dutch etching paper that was one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets. Titled in the plate lower left (THE MOHAVE), with "From Copyright Photograph 1907 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 7 1/2 x 4 5/8 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI 2383) and "Vol II" are written in pencil on the verso, along with a short cataloging note.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.

A clean, rich impression with the plate mark visible and clean margins apart from a few tiny spots. The lower outer corner is softly rounded. The back has a large tan stain that runs in from the outer edge across the middle of the sheet, behind the image; it does not show through to the front. A narrow strip of paper from the original binding remains along the bound edge on the back, lightly toned, with small brown stains at its lower end, and there are a few small brown spots in the lower margin on the back. Pencil notes on the verso. No tears noted. Sold unframed. less
