An original photogravure from Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian. A Santa Ana Man is a full-length portrait of a man from Santa Ana Pueblo, one of the Keres-speaking pueblos of New Mexico, standing beside a doorway in an adobe wall with timber beams overhead. Curtis made the photograph in 1925, and it was published in 1926 in Volume 16, which covers the Tiwa and Keres pueblos.
From Volume 16, facing page 88. Printed on Japon vellum, one of the three papers used for the original subscriber sets, a smooth, warm-toned sheet that holds the fine detail of the gravure. Titled in the plate lower left (A SANTA ANA MAN), with "From Copyright Photograph 1925 by E.S. Curtis" in the plate below the image. The plate mark shows around the image.
Image: 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Sheet: 12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.
Provenance: the Christopher G. Cardozo Collection. The collection's inventory number (CCI 3804) and "Volume XVI" are written in pencil on the verso.
A vintage impression from the original publication, not a later restrike. Sold unframed, ready to mat and frame.

A clean, even impression with the plate mark visible. A row of small binding holes runs along the left edge of the sheet, where the leaf was removed from its bound volume, with light creasing around a few of them; all are well outside the image. Light, even age toning to the margins and a few tiny spots, visible on close inspection. Pencil notes on the verso (Volume XVI, CCI 3804) with some faint smudging. No tears or repairs noted. Sold unframed. less
