Originally published in the 1932 edition of L’Illustration, the illustration accompanied an article by French writer and statesman Louis Barthou celebrating Schmied’s extraordinary artistic interpretation of Homer's Odyssey.

The composition depicts a stylized vision of Pylos, the ancient Greek city associated with King Nestor in Homer's epic. Architectural forms in warm terracotta and coral rise above a dramatic landscape of deep blue water, wooded hillsides, and slender trees. The distinctive geometric composition, rich colors, and intricate textures reflect Schmied's celebrated Art Deco aesthetic.
