The art of connection
sculptural linear pendant light — three handcrafted roots
“when the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind.”
three roots. Three journeys. One connection.
imagine three trees growing in different directions.
each follows its own path. Each develops its own character, its own unpredictable movements, its own way of reaching into the world.
and yet, beneath the surface, their roots begin to approach one another.
without losing their individuality, they gradually discover the possibility of connection.
the art of connection was born from this simple, almost magical idea: that we do not need to become alike in order to belong together.
part of the f+m fos grounding collection, the sculpture draws inspiration from a yoga practice — the sensation of rooting oneself deeply into the earth, finding security, and allowing growth to emerge from that stability.
but grounding is not only about our relationship with the earth. It is also about our relationship with one another.
sometimes, an unfamiliar presence enters our lives and something begins to change. Our boundaries soften. Our paths approach. What once seemed distant becomes familiar.
and somewhere between independence and togetherness, connection finds its form.
now look closer.
suspended beneath a handcrafted horizontal metal bar, three individual root sculptures extend into the surrounding space.
each root is created from more than 500 individual strands of wire, twisted, gathered, separated and shaped entirely by hand.
across the three roots, more than 1,500 strands participate in a composition that appears to have grown naturally.
but nothing here has been left to a machine.
designed by frankie cesare and handcrafted in greece together with his specialised team for f+m fos, the sculpture emerges through a demanding process of repeated human gestures.
the wire is gradually transformed from a rigid industrial material into delicate, irregular ramifications that resemble the complexity of actual roots.
each strand is guided by hand. Each division creates another possibility. Each branch develops its own direction.
there are no identical roots, because the hands that shape them do not reproduce nature mechanically. They interpret it.
what looks effortless is the result of patience, accumulated experience and highly specialised craftsmanship.
three individuals. Not three copies.
the three root sculptures share the same architectural structure, yet each retains its own organic character.
their branches approach, overlap and sometimes appear to reach toward one another.
there is an interesting contradiction here.
the horizontal bar provides order, geometry and stability. Beneath it, the roots introduce freedom, movement and unpredictability.
neither dominates the other.
the geometry gives the composition its architectural presence. The organic forms give it life.
this relationship makes the work particularly suited to a dining table, where people gather, conversations unfold, and individual lives briefly share the same space.
the sculpture becomes more than something hanging above a table.
it becomes part of the encounters taking place beneath it.
light needs shadow.
twenty individual points of warm light emerge from within the intertwined branches.
they do not simply illuminate the room. They reveal the sculpture from within.
the light catches the smallest divisions of copper wire, while the spaces between them create intricate shadows that extend beyond the physical object.
for frankie cesare, shadow is not merely the absence of light.
it is another form of drawing.
as the viewpoint changes, the sculpture changes with it. Metallic reflections appear and disappear, branches overlap differently, and shadows create a second, intangible composition around the work.
the sculpture occupies one space.
its light and shadows inhabit another.
colour is not a coating. It is a character.
the metalwork is finished through a combination of electrostatic coating and individually applied decorative patinas, using traditional gilding and icon-painting powders to create layered metallic, earthy and oxidised effects.
the version illustrated combines a deep brown bar with golden highlights and three brown roots enriched with gold and copper patinas.
the finishes are deliberately not perfectly uniform.
gold may appear more strongly along one curve, copper may emerge unexpectedly from a darker surface, and subtle variations reveal the irregular character of the handmade process.
five finish combinations are available:
brown bar with gold-tipped detailing, paired with brown roots with gold and copper highlights.
brown bar with gold and copper highlights, paired with copper roots with dark brown tips.
ecru bar with gold-tipped detailing, paired with ecru roots with golden tips.
oxidised silver-leaf bar, paired with silver-coloured roots.
oxidised silver-leaf bar, paired with pewter-finished roots.
these combinations offer different visual personalities, from warm and earthy to luminous and restrained.
because every surface is finished by hand, subtle variations make each creation individually distinctive.
the sculpture — technically
model: ria3ra/meg
type: suspended sculptural linear pendant light.
horizontal bar: 120 cm long × 12 cm deep × approximately 5 cm high.
sculptural composition: three handcrafted roots, each approximately 45 cm in diameter.
overall sculptural height: approximately 50 cm, excluding the adjustable suspension cables.
suspension: two adjustable steel cables, with suspension points approximately 70 cm apart. The hanging height can be adapted to the requirements of the space.
lighting: 20 dimmable g4 led bulbs, 12v, 2.2w / 3000k each.
total led consumption: 44w.
light bulbs: included.
transformer: concealed within the fixture, converting either 220v or 110v mains supply to 12v.
installation: hardwired ceiling installation by a qualified electrician.
production: individually handcrafted to order in greece.
authenticity: each fixture is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the designer.
120 cm of structure. Much more than 120 cm of presence.
the horizontal bar establishes the architectural length of the composition, while the three roots extend beyond the strict geometry of its surface.
their flexible branches can be gently repositioned, opened or brought closer together, allowing the silhouette to respond to the surrounding space.
the adjustable suspension cables provide another degree of freedom.
the sculpture may be positioned closer to the ceiling or lowered above a dining table, depending on the architecture and the atmosphere desired.
the length of the suspension does not change the dimensions of the sculptural body itself.
and because the branches are flexible, the work does not have to remain exactly as it appeared when it first arrived.
touch it. Let it become yours.
there is something frankie cesare has always wanted to challenge: the idea that a work of art must remain untouchable.
why should the person who lives with a sculpture be afraid to interact with it?
why should its first arrangement be its final one?
the roots are intentionally flexible, inviting gentle movement and personal interpretation.
one branch may be opened slightly farther. Another may be brought closer to its neighbour. A small adjustment may transform the balance of the composition and the shadows it creates.
these movements are not corrections to an unfinished work.
they are invitations to participate in its continuing life.
the sculpture begins in the hands of its makers, but it does not have to end there.
made by us. Continued by you.
every art of connection fixture is made to order by f+m fos in greece, through the combined work of frankie cesare and his specialised team.
the process brings together sculptural design, metalworking, electrical craftsmanship and the slow, demanding formation of hundreds upon hundreds of individual wire strands.
yet the ambition behind the work is not simply to demonstrate craftsmanship.
it is to create something that can become part of another person's life.
something that accompanies conversations, celebrations, silences and ordinary evenings.
something whose form may evolve as the people around it evolve.
because perhaps the most beautiful connection is not the one in which everything remains unchanged.
it is the one that leaves room for each of us to grow.
we create its beginning.
and when someone begins to interact with the sculpture, to change its form and discover new relationships between its branches, something beautiful happens:
the distance between the one who began the work and the one who continues it disappears, and creation becomes something we share. Signed by maker, labeled by maker,
