The two maidens are designed as a deliberate contrast: one bends forward against the breeze, while the other stands upright beside the tree-stump support.

Pale green Parian drapery is combined with ivory-white figures and discreet gilt decoration. Small gilt stars, delicate gilt lines and gilt-edged bases bring definition to the flowing garments without overwhelming the modelling. The colours and opposing poses make the pair particularly effective when displayed together.

James Hadley (1837–1903) trained at Kerr & Binns in Worcester and was principal modeller at Royal Worcester by 1870. "Before the Wind" was first made around 1862 and "Against the Wind" around 1865. The pair was subsequently produced over an extended period in several finishes.

Such polychrome versions were more labour-intensive and produced in smaller numbers than standard ivory figures, making them notably rarer and more desirable to collectors.

Dimensions: "Against the Wind": Weight 775 g; Height 26.2 cm; Width 10.2 cm; Depth 12.5 cm. "Before the Wind": Weight 741 g; Height 28.6 cm; Width 10.4 cm; Depth 10.4 cm.

Condition: "Against the Wind" has one minor chip to the lower edge of the base. "Before the Wind" has one small chip to the lower edge of the base. Otherwise, both figures are in excellent antique condition. UV examination confirms no restoration or repainting.
