The art of grounding with boundaries
sculptural circular pendant light — frankie cesare for f+m fos
“change your opinions, but remain faithful to your principles. Change your leaves, but never forget your roots.”
the beauty of having boundaries
roots are born to grow. They search, explore, reach into unfamiliar territory and discover their own direction.
but what happens when we give them a boundary?
do they stop growing? or do they discover a different kind of freedom?
the art of grounding with boundaries explores this delicate relationship between freedom and limitation, between the desire to expand and the need to belong.
a circle surrounds a sculptural composition of roots. Yet it does not imprison them. It offers them a space in which to exist, to move, to intertwine and to find their own balance.
perhaps human relationships are not so different.
we need freedom to remain ourselves. But we also need boundaries to understand where we end and another person begins.
and sometimes, within those boundaries, something unexpectedly beautiful begins to grow.
a circle. A root. Two different characters.
the circle is precise, architectural and deliberate.
the root is unpredictable, instinctive and organic.
one establishes a boundary. The other introduces movement.
together, they create a composition in which neither dominates the other.
the contrast is intentional. The geometric simplicity of the circle allows the intricate complexity of the root to become visible, while the organic movement of the root softens the discipline of the surrounding structure.
designed by frankie cesare and handcrafted in greece together with his specialised team for f+m fos, the pendant brings together two distinct forms of craftsmanship: the carefully finished metal circle and the individually sculpted copper-wire root.
now look closer.
the root is not cast from a mould.
it is constructed from more than 300 individual strands of copper wire, gathered, twisted, separated and shaped entirely by hand.
what initially appears to be a natural fragment of a tree is the result of hundreds of deliberate human gestures.
the strands gradually divide into smaller and smaller ramifications, creating the irregular complexity of an actual root.
no two handmade compositions can ever be perfectly identical.
the subtle differences are not imperfections. They are the traces of the hands that created the work.
three surfaces. One composition.
the circle has two distinct surfaces: an exterior and an interior.
the root introduces a third.
and this is where colour becomes more than decoration.
the outer surface establishes the sculpture's presence. The inner surface creates its atmosphere. The root connects the two through its texture, movement and intricate network of branches.
the version illustrated features a dark brown oxidised exterior and an interior clad in oxidised gold leaf, with warm golden variations that catch and reflect the light.
within the circle, the root is finished in brown electrostatic coating and subsequently worked by hand with gold and copper-toned traditional icon-painting powders, creating delicate oxidised, almost rust-like effects.
the patinas are intentionally irregular. They are not intended to produce a perfectly uniform industrial surface, but to suggest the passage of time, natural transformation and the individuality of handmade work.
five finish combinations. Five different atmospheres.
the circle and the root can be finished in coordinated combinations, allowing their contrasting surfaces to create a harmonious visual relationship.
option 1 — brown & oxidised gold
outer circle: brown with gold highlights
inner circle: oxidised gold leaf
root: brown with gold and copper highlights
option 2 — copper & dark brown
outer circle: brown with gold and copper highlights
inner circle: oxidised copper leaf
root: copper with dark brown tips
option 3 — ecru & gold
outer circle: ecru with gold highlights
inner circle: ecru with gold highlights
root: ecru with golden tips
option 4 — ecru & oxidised gold
outer circle: ecru with gold highlights
inner circle: oxidised gold leaf
root: ecru with golden tips
option 5 — oxidised silver
outer circle: oxidised silver leaf
inner circle: oxidised silver leaf
root: silver
each combination changes the dialogue between geometry and nature, allowing the same sculptural idea to acquire a different personality.
the available finishes are illustrated in the accompanying photographs.
light needs shadow.
light is not merely placed inside the sculpture.
it travels through the branches, touches the metallic surfaces and reveals the extraordinary intricacy of the copper-wire construction.
nine points of warm light are distributed throughout the root, creating delicate reflections on the oxidised interior of the circle.
and then comes the shadow.
the countless fine ramifications create an additional, intangible composition on the surrounding surfaces.
the sculpture therefore exists in two forms: the one made of metal, and the one made of light and shadow.
as the viewpoint changes, the relationship between them changes too.
55 cm is a diameter. Not a restriction on expression.
the surrounding circle measures approximately 55 cm in diameter, with a band depth of approximately 10 cm.
the root within it has an approximate natural spread of 45 cm.
its branches are deliberately flexible and can be carefully repositioned, opened or brought closer together to alter their density and silhouette while remaining within the circular composition.
the pendant is suspended by an adjustable cable system, allowing its distance from the ceiling to respond to the proportions and requirements of the space.
the suspension height is independent of the sculptural dimensions.

touch it. Let it become yours.
there is something particularly beautiful about an artwork that does not demand to remain untouched.
the root is intentionally flexible.
its branches can be gently redirected, allowing the person living with the sculpture to participate in its final appearance.
perhaps one branch should open a little further. Perhaps another should turn towards the light. Perhaps the composition should feel denser, or allow more space between its delicate ramifications.
these small decisions become part of the work.
the sculpture does not arrive with a single, permanently imposed expression.
it invites a relationship.
made by us. Continued by you.
every piece begins in the hands of frankie cesare and his specialised team at f+m fos.
the circle is prepared, its surfaces individually finished, and the copper-wire root patiently brought into existence through repeated gestures of twisting, separating and shaping.
each creation is made to order, and the subtle variations inherent in the process make every piece individually distinctive.
but the creative process does not necessarily end when the work leaves the studio.
the person who lives with it may discover another balance, another direction, another relationship between the branches, the light and the surrounding space.
and perhaps this is the deeper meaning of the art of grounding with boundaries.
boundaries do not always exist to prevent freedom.
sometimes they give freedom a place in which to become visible.
we create its beginning. You are free to continue it.
and in that moment, the distance between the one who began the work and the one who continues it disappears, and creation becomes something we share. Signed by maker, labeled by maker,
