An unusual French Old Paris porcelain coffee cup and saucer, made circa 1820. The gently tapered cup has a gilt interior and loop handle. Its two painted reserves depict a fisherman with a dog at the water's edge and a woodsman cutting a tree. Four rural landscapes with cottages, bridges and trees decorate the saucer.
The landscapes recall the picturesque imagery associated with Jean-Baptiste Pillement. Their combination with the orange-ground decoration is particularly distinctive: the panels carry antique martial emblems including a wyvern, a curved horn crossed with a pole-arm, a laurel-wreathed mask with weapons, and a standard-like trophy.
No comparable porcelain design combining pastoral landscapes with this precise cycle of military symbols has been located in the museum collections and decorative-arts literature reviewed to date. The imagery may express the classical idea that military success protects peace and rural life, suggesting that the pair may have formed part of a specially commissioned service, possibly for a high-ranking military commander.
Paris litron cups and saucers of related form and Empire decoration are represented in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in a group dated 1800–1810. The present pair is a later example of this refined Paris taste. The saucer bears a small underglaze-blue letter C, a technical mark.
Dimensions: Cup — Weight 105 g; Height 5.8 cm; Width including handle 8.5 cm; Diameter 6.1 cm. Saucer — Weight 111 g; Height 2.8 cm; Diameter 12.6 cm.
Condition: The cup is in very good antique condition, with slight wear to the gilding on the handle and rim. Its painted scenes are exceptionally well preserved, and the interior gilding remains excellent. The saucer has minor gilt wear; its painted landscapes and orange-ground motifs remain in excellent condition. UV examination revealed no cracks, restoration or repainting.
