a magnificent work by timoteo pérez rubio (1896-1977), this oil on cardboard by the renowned spanish landscape and portrait painter depicts, with exceptionally loose brushstrokes, a landscape in a humid environment with river plants and vegetation, such as reeds. This work is dominated by green, a color that shifts into different shades to create the plants and a composition on different planes, as seen in the ochre-toned flow of water. It is a closed view, where the plants envelop the viewer, who sees the small patch of sky opening up through the vegetation as the only vanishing point. Signed in the lower left corner, “t. Pérez rubio.”
the artist's career shows a clear evolution, beginning with an early style influenced by french impressionism. This connection stems from a 1918 exhibition in madrid, where he encountered the work of these artists, primarily monet, camille pissarro, and santiago rusiñol. Later, he incorporated the new avant-garde trends he encountered during his time abroad, such as cubist and surrealist influences. Landscapes predominate in his work, but numerous portraits can also be found, such as those he painted of his wife, rosa chacel, and various acquaintances.
a native of badajoz, he began his artistic training at the school of arts and crafts in his hometown. In 1915, he moved to madrid to continue his studies at the royal academy of fine arts of san fernando, where he received a landscape painting scholarship at the paular school. It was there that he met his future wife, rosa chacel, whom he married in 1922. That same year, he traveled to rome, affiliated with the spanish academy. His stay, which lasted until 1928, proved crucial in his artistic development, establishing him as a great landscape painter in the style of the french impressionists.
upon his return to spain, he joined the second society of iberian artists, where he introduced the new avant-garde trends. This allowed him to win his first medal at the national fine arts exhibition in 1932 and the position of deputy director of the museum of modern art in madrid in 1933. After the outbreak of the spanish civil war, he played a fundamental role in defending spain's artistic heritage, overseeing the relocation of the most important works from madrid, especially those from the prado museum, which were moved to valencia and later to geneva. This alignment with the republican side led to his exile after the war. Timoteo settled in rio de janeiro, brazil, where he continued his artistic work for the rest of his life. Years before his death, he returned to spain in 1974, for the first and last time after his exile, to attend an exhibition of his work at the national library.
