A striking pair of monumental wall sconces in hand-hammered copper, each conceived as a sweeping palm frond rising in layered, overlapping leaves. The fan-like composition, built up on several planes, casts dramatic shadows on the wall and gives the pieces a strong sculptural presence. The candle-cup bobèche is ringed by a crown of individually cut and hand-shaped leaves, and the base curls into a scrolled tip. The exotic botanical motif reflects the taste for colonial and tropical themes that flourished in French decorative arts in the 1930s, in the spirit of the great Art Deco dinandiers and ferronniers d'art. The copper shows a beautiful, untouched natural patina: warm red tones on the raised surfaces and verdigris settled in the folds and recesses. Each sconce takes a single bulb.
