An exceptional graphic work, a serigraph on paper, titled “The Kiss” by the artist Gregorio Prieto, an artist associated with the Generation of '27 and known as “the painter of the Generation of '27.” Signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right corner.
Prieto understood drawing as the purest and most direct way to express human thought and sensibility. In general, his graphic work features a clear, minimalist line of black strokes that stand out against the light background of the paper. In this case, the lovers' faces are represented with schematic features, continuous and fluid lines that define the essential forms without the need for complex details. Their intertwined hands complete and balance the composition.
This is a very special work due to its exclusivity and provenance, as it comes from the estate of the artist couple Timoteo Pérez Rubio and Rosa Chacel. The relationship between the three began in Madrid around 1915, when they met as students at the prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and it endured through time, travels, and the traumas of exile, as they maintained contact through letters despite the physical distance.
Gregorio Prieto Muñoz (Valdepeñas, Ciudad Real, 1897-1992)
Gregorio Prieto was a renowned painter, draftsman, and engraver. Although his fame as a painter often overshadows his writing, he was also a writer, poet, and essayist. He wrote fundamental texts for understanding the inner world of the Generation of '27, most notably his work *Lorca and His Angelic World* (1972).
His visual art is notable for its fusion of classical tradition with the spirit of the new European artistic avant-gardes. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he met colleagues such as Rafael Alberti and Rosa Chacel, at which time their friendship began. He received several scholarships to further his studies, spending time in Paris, Belgium, and at the Spanish Academy in Rome, thus interacting with other artists, such as Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. All of this shaped his personal style.
He maintained close friendships with the leading intellectuals of the time, particularly his collaborations and close personal ties with Federico García Lorca and Rafael Alberti. During the post-war period, he lived in London, where he befriended Luis Cernuda.
Currently, some of his work is part of public and state collections, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo de la Fundación Gregorio Prieto, located in his hometown.
