Two shelves hold an arrangement of upright, leaning and stacked books. Their simplified shapes create a balance of verticals, horizontals and diagonals, with open spaces allowing the textured background to remain visible. The title, meaning “Point of Balance,” reflects the relationships between these different weights and directions.

Cream, ochre, warm grey and deep blue establish a restrained palette, punctuated by turquoise and burnt orange in the lower stack. The books suggest a familiar, lived-in space while their individual titles and details remain unspoken.

Successive layers of oil paint, worked with palette knife and brush, create a tactile surface. Scraped passages reveal underlying colours, suggesting worn bindings and the passage of time.
