An exceptional two-piece ensemble of Italian Mid-Century Modern art pottery, circa 1960s–early 1970s, comprising a generously proportioned footed centerpiece bowl and a coordinating sculptural ashtray. Distinguished by their brilliant turquoise grounds, saturated cobalt-blue and emerald-green decoration, and expressive geometric motifs, the two pieces embody the exuberant artistic character of postwar Italian ceramic design.
Both pieces retain their original paper identification labels, bearing the numerical designation 238 and additional individual model or inventory markings. The surviving labels and documented Italian manufacture provide valuable historical evidence connecting the pieces to the period's flourishing decorative ceramics industry. The ensemble is attributed to the Italian pottery lines distributed in the United States by Rosenthal Netter, Inc., although the specific manufacturing workshop remains unidentified.
Rosenthal Netter was a prominent American importer and distributor of Italian decorative ceramics during the mid-20th century. The company helped introduce American consumers to the expressive forms, vivid glazes, and innovative surface treatments produced by Italian ceramic workshops, including those associated with the celebrated modernist traditions of Tuscany.
The larger centerpiece bowl exhibits an elegant, inverted bell-shaped profile, supported by a distinctly articulated circular pedestal foot. Its exterior is decorated with overlapping, scalloped geometric forms in alternating shades of turquoise, cobalt blue, and green, outlined in dark contrasting glaze. The repeating composition suggests stylized botanical petals or fish scales, creating a richly patterned surface with considerable visual depth.
The interior is finished in a brilliant turquoise glaze, revealing subtle concentric throwing marks characteristic of its ceramic construction. The generous proportions and elevated form lend the bowl a strong architectural presence, particularly suited to display on a dining table, console, or mid-century credenza.
The accompanying ashtray features a broad, shallow circular form with sculpturally molded cigarette rests incorporated into its rim. Its interior presents a striking abstract floral composition formed from concentric arrangements of rounded turquoise, green, and deep-blue petals, defined by expressive dark outlines. The decoration recalls the bold, simplified botanical imagery associated with European modernist design and the graphic sensibilities of the late 1960s.
Of particular visual interest is the textured glaze within the green and cobalt-blue decorative passages, contrasting beautifully with the smoother turquoise surfaces. These variations produce an engaging interplay of color, texture, and reflected light.
The ensemble reflects the postwar Italian ceramic industry's departure from conventional historical ornamentation toward expressive, sculptural forms and confident modernist decoration. The pairing of two distinctly different functional objects united by a common decorative vocabulary is particularly appealing.
Offered together as a coordinated two-piece ensemble, the bowl and ashtray retain their individual identities while presenting a harmonious decorative statement. Their striking colors, sculptural silhouettes, and characteristic period detailing make them especially well suited to sophisticated Mid-Century Modern, Italian Modernist, and eclectic interiors.

Both pieces exhibit fine glaze crazing throughout, consistent with age and the characteristics of vintage glazed earthenware. The centerpiece bowl retains its distinctive sculptural profile and decorative finish, with visible crazing and minor age-related surface characteristics. The ashtray displays localized edge wear, including two small areas of glaze loss along the outer rim that expose the underlying ceramic body. These imperfections are documented in the accompanying close-up photographs. Several minute, light-colored glaze pinholes are visible within the ashtray's central floral decoration. Their rounded appearance suggests minor firing-related glaze irregularities, rather than subsequent impact damage, although their precise origin cannot be conclusively established. The richly textured green and cobalt-blue decorative passages exhibit variations in glaze application and surface character consistent with artisanal ceramic production. No major structural damage is apparent upon visual examination. Both pieces retain their original vintage paper identification labels on the undersides, showing age-related wear appropriate to their period. The photographs form an integral part of the condition description and document the surface crazing, localized rim wear, and glaze characteristics in detail. less
