For sale is a stunning, authentic 1984 large-scale abstract expressionist multi-dimensional collage wall sculpture by the renowned contemporary artist Michael Mulhern (1940–2012).
This is a museum-quality piece from Mulhern’s highly defining mid-1980s studio period. During this era, he moved away from traditional flat canvas to pioneer these massive, dynamic dimensional works—layering, looping, and curling materials off the surface to create a striking 3D ribbon effect that shifts beautifully depending on your room's lighting.
Key Features & Details:
• Artist: Michael Mulhern (Prominent NY abstract expressionist, featured in institutions like the 9/11 Memorial Museum and NYU Fales Library collections).
• Year: 1984 (Breakthrough era for his 3D structural reliefs).
• Dimensions: Heavy 46" x 40" rectangular wood panel.
• Medium: Mixed-media / Oil / Acrylic dimensional relief securely anchored on a solid, rigid wood board.
• Tones: Rich, sophisticated blend of earthy, metallic, and muted tones with sweeping gestural brushstrokes.
• Provenance: Features an authentic, personalized handwritten note from the artist on the reverse side to the previous owner (my aunt), firmly anchoring its timeline and authenticity.
Condition & Presentation:
The piece is in excellent vintage condition with spectacular structural integrity. The heavy wood backing ensures the 3D elements remain perfectly supported. It serves as an incredible, commanding statement piece for a living room, vaulted entryway, office lobby, or fine art collection.
