This exceptional studio pottery cup is a hand thrown original by artist Jeff Dempsey. After a distinguished career working on the big screen in the fast paced world of cinematography and videography, Dempsey retired his lens to find a different kind of focus- at the pottery wheel. Translating his sharp eye for framing, light, and texture into physical clay, he has spent years mastering studio ceramics. Dempsey specializes in a highly sophisticated, minimalist industrial Wabi Sabi aesthetic. His work honors, the traditional Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in natural imperfections, while subtly infusing, clean, structured, machine-aged silhouettes, derived from his decades in production environments.
This tapered stoneware cup, perfectly embodies that minimalist, industrial edge. The upper body features clean, unadorned lines that taper down toward a heavy, stable base accented by rhythmic row of hand carved dimples. The exterior is finished in a metallic, earth, toned, bronze, and ochre glaze that creates a subtle, raw shimmer, shifting beautifully in direct light. The rigid, geometric square block handle acts as an architectural anchor, contrasting elegantly against the organic flow of the hand-thrown clay body.
Perfect for serving an artisanal morning, coffee, styling a rustic, open kitchen shelf, or adding a soulful, named peace to a contemporary studio pottery collection.
