Antique oil painting on board - Russian icon portrait of Saint Nicholas circa 1925. Framed in gilt wood molding. Measures 9 1/2" x 8" framed; 6 7/8" x 5 3/8" sight. Good condition.
Saint Nicholas is shown with a white beard, wearing hierarchical vestments and an ornate bishop's miter or crown. The legend of Nicholas traveled through Europe, evolving into the Dutch Sinterklaas, which American writers and illustrators like Thomas Nast transformed into the secular, chimney-descending Santa Claus. Beautifully painted.
