"Whipper's Uncle (or Tungwup Ta'amu or Tunqwup-Ta-amu) refers to a specific Kachina (Katsina) spirit figure ... Whipper's Uncle behaves primarily as a guard and protector ... He is usually seen guarding the traditional Hopi Bean Dance Parade. He does not whip or punish individuals ... He is a popular subject for Hopi master carvers, who hand-carve intricate representations of him out of cottonwood root."
