An exceptional, authentic early 20th-century Chinese provincial tri-leg milking stool crafted from aged old-growth Northern Elmwood. Brimming with rustic texture and wabi-sabi charm, this highly collectible primitive piece features a thick, round slab seat highlighting a deeply weathered gnarled grain pattern and honest, localized wear from decades of authentic rural use.
The structural engineering of this particular stool is a standout testament to traditional Chinese carpentry. The splayed legs pass completely through the seat via beautifully exposed wedged through-tenon joints. To reinforce its longevity, a traditional wooden peg repair was historically implemented on one of the main leg joints. A craftsman precision-drilled a clean mortise loop and drove a small wooden dowel directly through the timber to lock the leg's tenon firmly into place. This pinned joint is completely tight, rigid, and rock-solid under weight.
Below, the legs are rigidly tied together by a rare, complex interlocking three-way lap joint (puzzle joint) locked seamlessly at the intersection with its original central wooden pin. The underside of the seat retains its original character, complete with hand-tool markings and faded, authentic Chinese ink markings from its historic province origin.
With its compact footprint and low center of gravity, this versatile piece serves beautifully in contemporary interiors as an organic accent table, plant stand, or sculptural styling object for Japandi, Modern Farmhouse, or eclectic design spaces.
