An exceptional, museum-quality turn-of-the-century original oil painting by the listed American academic artist Frederick Mortimer Lamb (Massachusetts, 1861–1936). Masterfully rendered in the classic American Tonalist tradition, this piece captures a serene, sun-dappled winter forest interior with a captivating hidden wildlife narrative.
The foreground features a beautifully rendered cottontail rabbit nestled in a snow-covered woodland clearing. Peer into the deep, moody shadows of the tree line just behind the rabbit, and you will discover a camouflaged fox or hunting hound lurking in the brush. Known for his classic New England hunt scenes, Lamb masterfully uses this hidden element to introduce a striking predator-and-prey dynamic. His robust use of thick, textured impasto brushwork brings incredible dimension to the snow and tree bark, catching ambient light beautifully.
About the Artist:
Frederick Mortimer Lamb studied formally at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and later traveled to France to refine his style at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris. He was an active figure in early 20th-century New England art circles, and his original paintings are highly collectible, commanding strong values for his woodland landscapes and fox/hunt scenery.
