This is a charming pair of vintage Chinese bronze sculptures depicting elephants. Crafted from solid copper/bronze, the figures feature intricate gold inlay (cuo jin) and a rich, archaeological-style patina with heavy green oxidation (verdigris).
Symbolism & Design:
In Chinese culture, the elephant is a highly auspicious symbol. The word for elephant (Xiang) is a homophone for "Xiang" (祥), meaning good luck, peace, and prosperity. A pair of elephants represents a wish for "Tai Ping You Xiang" (Peace and Prosperity).
The Elephants: The pair are depicted standing with their trunks curled upwards, a traditional pose believed to bring good fortune and energy. Their bodies are richly decorated with swirling, archaistic gold-inlaid patterns (likely stylized clouds or coins).
The Finish: The bronze shows a dark base patina heavily accented with natural green verdigris, contrasting beautifully with the bright gold inlays. This gives them a museum-quality, ancient aesthetic.
