This is a dynamic pair of vintage Chinese bronze sculptures depicting galloping horses. Crafted from solid copper/bronze, the figures feature intricate gold inlay (cuo jin) and a striking, archaeological-style patina with heavy green oxidation (verdigris).
Symbolism & Design:
In Chinese culture, the horse is a powerful symbol of strength, perseverance, and success (as in the idiom "Ma Dao Cheng Gong" - immediate success upon arrival). The horses are captured in mid-stride, with one front leg raised and their heads turned toward each other, creating a sense of movement and interaction.
The Horses: Their bodies are richly decorated with swirling, archaistic gold-inlaid patterns (likely stylized clouds or flames). They feature detailed manes, tails, and facial expressions.
The Finish: The bronze shows a dark base patina heavily accented with natural green verdigris, contrasting beautifully with the bright gold inlays. This gives them a museum-quality, ancient aesthetic.
