A substantial white-glazed porcelain figure of the multi-armed Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the bodhisattva of compassion, modeled in the Chinese blanc-de-Chine (Dehua) sculptural tradition.
Attributed to the early 20th century based on the seller's assessment of its construction. This dating is an estimate.
Seated in meditation upon an elaborate lotus throne, the figure has a serene, downcast expression beneath an ornate crown adorned with miniature devotional figures and delicate beaded ornamentation. The principal hands are joined at the chest in a gesture of reverence, while a lower pair supports a slender vase. Additional arms radiate outward, presenting symbolic attributes and finely modeled hand gestures. Two raised arms extend above the crown, each supporting a circular emblem.
Layered robes fall in deeply modeled folds across the shoulders and legs. The richly articulated pedestal features overlapping lotus petals above swirling waves and scrolling floral details. A lustrous white glaze emphasizes the sculptural modeling.
Two impressed seals appear on the back of the figure: one double-gourd-shaped and the other rectangular. The inscriptions are too indistinct to identify conclusively. The seals and design evoke the traditional Dehua porcelain sculptural vocabulary; they do not, by themselves, establish the maker, manufacturing country, or production date.
