A striking antique hand-colored engraving of John James Audubon’s iconic Barred Owl (Strix nebulosa, now Strix varia), shown as a male adult perched dynamically on a branch with wings partially raised, confronting a grey squirrel (Sciurus cinereus).
This is Plate 36 (No. 10) from the first octavo edition of The Birds of America (circa 1840–1844), engraved and colored after Audubon’s original drawings.
The composition captures Audubon’s signature dramatic naturalism: the owl’s barred plumage rendered in meticulous detail, the squirrel alert and lifelike, set against a simple branch with a few green leaves. Lettering at the bottom identifies the subjects and credits the original publication.
Presented in a handsome dark wood frame with a classic molded profile that complements the print’s 19th-century character. The paper shows the expected warm cream tone of age, with the image remaining clear and the coloring soft yet distinct.
Ideal for a library, study, hallway, or any space seeking a sophisticated natural-history statement. A true piece of American ornithological art history that pairs beautifully with traditional, transitional, or collected interiors.
