This striking vintage brutalist oil painting is a boldly executed and atmospheric urban street scene of genuine artistic ambition and presence. A lone figure in a light jacket walks down the rain-slicked center of a city thoroughfare, moving away from the viewer into a hazy distance of towering dark buildings, while blurred silhouettes carrying umbrellas line the wet sidewalks on either side.
The artist employs a heavy impasto palette knife technique throughout, building up thick, tactile layers of paint that give the buildings, wet pavement, and sky a fractured, almost architectural physicality. Vertical streaky strokes across the lower canvas masterfully mimic the shimmering reflections of lights and architecture on wet asphalt, pulling the eye downward and creating a compelling double image of city and street.
The cool, muted palette of pale mint green, soft cream, and slate gray sky is grounded by charcoal and deep brown structural tones, with small warm dabs of muted yellow and ochre animating the sidewalk figures and breaking the stark composition open just enough. The large 40" square format gives the piece a commanding, gallery-quality presence.
