The heaviest masses sit on the diagonal: the large blue peony, pink peony and lilac blossom crowd the upper right, while a deep-blue peony and a second pink peony anchor the lower left and lower centre. The eye travels along this diagonal and never settles on a central medallion.Large areas of the golden-yellow field are left open, especially along the left-centre and right-centre. This is a signature Art Deco device.
Large peonies sit beside small four-petal blossoms, tiny buds and a mix of leaf shapes (teal, cobalt, terracotta and cream). This variety avoids repetition and gives the asymmetry a lively, natural rhythm, as if seen in a real garden. The raspberry-rose border works as a vivid frame, and the gold field glows against it. Every colour here is clear and saturated: golden yellow, magenta-rose, cobalt, sky blue, turquoise, lilac, coral-pink and creamy ivory. The rug shows the Art Deco asymmetric protocol through its diagonal balance, generous open field, and branches that break the border. This Chinese rug is in excellent condition. It has been cleaned professionally and is free of any stains or odors. See less
