This remarkable antique Samarkand rug, dating to circa 1900, features a beautifully expressive pictorial composition of flying birds, flowering plants, and oversized botanical motifs against a rich terracotta-red background. Handwoven in wool, the rug reflects the distinctive artistic traditions of Central Asian weaving, particularly the influence of Chinese decorative imagery on historic Samarkand textile design.
The composition is organized as an open botanical landscape rather than a conventional repeating carpet pattern. Several birds appear throughout the field, each represented in a different position. A prominent bird with fully extended wings occupies the upper left portion, while another large bird flies horizontally across the center-right. Smaller birds are scattered among flowering branches and broad leaves, creating a lively sense of movement. Their delicately outlined feathers, curved bodies, and expressive silhouettes give the design a distinctive pictorial character.
Surrounding the birds are large lotus-like leaves, rounded blossoms, flowering stems, bamboo-inspired foliage, and slender branches. Some leaves feature deeply divided outlines and carefully drawn veins, while others are rendered as simplified botanical forms. Small geometric cloud-like markings appear throughout the background, adding another decorative element to the composition.
The color palette is dominated by terracotta red, brick red, coral, faded crimson, antique gold, mustard yellow, olive green, sage green, camel, sand, beige, ivory, taupe, and charcoal brown. The contrast between the warm red field and the softly colored birds and botanical elements creates a visually balanced and sophisticated appearance.
Measuring approximately 8'6" × 5'3", this antique Samarkand rug offers generous proportions suitable for a living room, bedroom, library, or collected interior. Its unusual combination of pictorial birds, botanical ornament, and traditional Central Asian craftsmanship makes it an appealing decorative textile with strong historical and artistic interest.
