Large bronze sculpture of La Frileuse, also known as L’Hiver (Winter), originally sculpted in marble by Jean-Antoine Houdon in 1783 and now in the Musée Fabre in Montpellier.
This work depicts a young, nude woman standing shivering, wrapped tightly in a large fringed shawl that covers her head and shoulders while obscuring her face in shadow. She stands on a round, textured bronze base, signed Réne. The patinated bronze has a brilliant finish that reflects light onto the contours of her body, the intricate folds of the drapery, and the detailed fringe of the shawl.
The woman's hunched posture, with her arms crossed and hands clasping the shawl around her, and her head bowed, conveys a sense of vulnerability and introspection. The original work is renowned for its realism and the delicacy of its drapery: this young, nude woman, shivering, draped only in a simple shawl over her head and shoulders, embodies the allegory of the winter season in a modern and poignant way.
