Besides the innovation and attention to detail that define his creations, he is considered one of the most prolific designers of his generation, having created thousands of designs across more than twenty collections of furniture, textiles, and lighting. Many of these pieces are now part of permanent museum collections throughout the country.

Described as a "national treasure" by The New York Times, Hutton is also recognized for designing classic forms that remain fashionable after forty years on the market. In 1990, he was also one of the first furniture designers to adopt environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques, offering pieces stuffed with animal hair and cotton wadding rather than foam, using sustainably sourced hardwoods, and employing natural adhesives.
