This distinctive antique Samarkand rug, dating to the early 1900s, features an unusual arrangement of ornamental vases, flowering branches, and stylized botanical motifs against a warm, beautifully aged red ground. Associated with the historic weaving traditions of East Turkestan and the Central Asian trading center of Samarkand, rugs of this decorative character are admired for their imaginative compositions, symbolic imagery, and combination of Chinese and Central Asian artistic influences.
The central field is organized around a series of four large decorative vessels, each rendered with its own distinctive shape and geometric ornamentation. One tall vase displays a diamond lattice pattern with rounded ornamental handles, while another features a broad rounded body, narrow neck, and three elongated feet. A rectangular vessel is decorated with geometric crosshatching and supports tall, pointed botanical leaves. At the opposite end, a smaller basket-like container holds an arrangement of long, upright leaves and flowering branches.
Delicate flowering stems, scattered blossoms, circular medallions, and stylized branches extend between the vessels, creating an open, asymmetrical composition. The contrast between the geometric outlines of the containers and the softer botanical elements gives the rug a particularly expressive character.
The color palette is centered on faded brick red, terracotta, coral, dusty rose, salmon pink, antique gold, camel, sand, olive green, sage, muted brown, and soft ivory. Dark brown and charcoal outlines define the individual motifs, while the softened coloration gives the design an attractive antique appearance.
The composition is enclosed by a narrow pink border decorated with small circular symbols and a wider olive-gold outer border featuring repeating geometric leaf forms, stylized flowers, and botanical ornament. Measuring approximately 6'5" × 4'7", this antique rug offers a versatile decorative size suitable for a living room, study, bedroom, or intimate seating area. Its combination of ornamental vessels, delicate floral details, and warm coloration makes it an especially interesting example of early 20th-century Samarkand-style weaving.
