A wonderful Edwardian English match striker dating to 1906, combining a substantial ribbed glass body with a sterling silver collar. The silver carries traditional British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, the London assay mark, and the date mark corresponding to 1906.
The deeply horizontal-ribbed glass was designed as a striking surface for matches, while the recessed opening at the top provided a convenient place to hold them. Its compact hourglass silhouette gives what was originally an everyday smoking accessory an unusually sculptural presence.
Pieces such as this were commonly placed on a gentleman's desk, smoking table or within an entertaining space during the Edwardian period.
