A handsome set of spiral library steps by Kittinger of Buffalo, New York, one of America's most respected makers of traditional fine furniture. It has four fan-shaped quarter-round treads that spiral around a tall turned mahogany column with faux-bamboo rings, topped by a solid brass ball finial that doubles as a handhold. Turned supports join the treads, and a curved stretcher ties the base together. The construction is solid and stable underfoot.
It carries the Kittinger Buffalo oval brand and the original paper label reading pattern 1726 C, serial 143.
It's as useful as it is good-looking. Use it to reach the high shelves in a library or study, or as a sculptural stand for plants, books, or objects.
Condition: very good vintage condition with a rich, warm patina. The treads show light surface wear consistent with age and use, including some small scratches and nicks, most visible on the top tread. The brass finial has a natural aged glow, and the piece is sturdy with no wobble. Please see all photos.
