This is an exceptional 19th-century Pennsylvania half-spindle plank-seat side chair, showcasing original, authentic American country folk art. This rare piece features charming freehand, hand-painted details. The lower back splat is adorned with a beautiful cluster of blueberries and leaves, while the upper crest rail displays large hand-painted peaches framed by matching foliage. Elegant hand-painted gold pin-striping beautifully traces the contours of the backrest, spindles, and turned legs.
**The underside of the solid plank seat features an authentic 19th-century handwritten script signature, appearing to read "Snyder" (?). This signature offers incredible historical provenance tied to the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch workshops of the mid-to-late 1800s. It stands beautifully as a singular accent piece for a foyer, entryway, desk, or cozy bedroom corner.
Condition Details:** This antique chair is in sturdy, structurally sound condition with a tight frame and secure joinery. The original dark-painted finish boasts an exquisite, tight all-over craquelure patina, providing undeniable evidence of its 19th-century age. It shows honest, age-appropriate surface scuffs, light scratches, and areas of paint rubbing on the plank seat consistent with over 150 years of domestic history.
The underside reveals significant historical surface wear, including two notable shallow wood gouges/chew marks to the raw wood on the front stretcher rung and the lower section of one leg (as pictured). These are purely cosmetic, do not compromise the structural integrity of the legs or support rungs, and add to the chair's authentic, lived-in primitive charm.
