This extremely rare and oversized ceiling pendant model 622 is a striking example of late 1950s italian lighting design, conceived and manufactured by stilnovo. Defined by its impressive scale and elegant teardrop silhouette, the lamp commands attention even when unlit, functioning as a sculptural centerpiece within an interior. The pendant features a large white milk glass diffuser that softly distributes light, partially enveloped by a black enameled aluminum outer shade. This half opaline and half covered construction creates a refined and atmospheric lighting effect, balancing direct illumination with a warm, diffused glow. When illuminated, the contrast between glass and metal becomes particularly expressive, highlighting stilnovo’s mastery of material and proportion. A subtle yet highly distinctive detail is the perforation pattern integrated into the aluminum shade. While visually decorative, these perforations were originally designed as a functional solution to allow heat to escape, demonstrating the rational and innovative approach that defines stilnovo’s production of the period. Another elegant detail is the spherical element positioned between the ceiling cap and the shade. Beyond its sculptural quality, this ball allows for easy height adjustment without the need to remove the lamp from the ceiling, a thoughtful and user friendly feature. Notably, model 622 is published in numerous original stilnovo advertisements from the late 1950s and early 1960s, underlining its importance within the manufacturer’s collection at the time. The frequency with which the model appears in period advertising suggests that stilnovo actively promoted this design as a key piece in their range. Yet, despite this apparent prominence, remarkably few examples surface on the market today. The reasons for this remain unclear, adding an extra layer of intrigue and desirability to an already exceptional lamp. The black painted aluminum ceiling cap is fully original and reflects the high level of finish characteristic of stilnovo. The lamp remains in excellent condition for its age, with no noteworthy marks. It is fitted with an e27 socket and supports bulbs up to 100 watts, making it both practical and visually exceptional.
