We are pleased to present this splendid oil painting on wood panel, dating back to the 19th century. The work bears a signature in the lower right corner, attributable to the French painter Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (Marseille, October 14, 1824 – Marseille, June 29, 1886).
The painting depicts noble ladies in 18th-century attire engaged in conversation outdoors. A lady in the center stands out; wearing a voluminous, pure white gown and a matching headdress, she captures the majority of the light and serves as the painting's focal point. Another lady, seen from behind, wears a striking golden-yellow dress with a train trailing toward the ground. A figure clad in a dark red or crimson gown rounds out the group on the left, creating a strong color contrast with the white and yellow. The scene unfolds in a wooded garden; on the right, a light-colored stone pillar or architectural fragment—partially overgrown with vegetation—evokes the typical features of historic estate parks. The background is dominated by tall, leafy trees that part in the center, revealing a glimpse of bright sky and hints of autumn foliage in shades of orange and red. The artistic quality is excellent, characterized by a highly textured style featuring dense, rapid, and vibrant brushstrokes. Facial features and clothing details are not rendered realistically but are instead evoked through touches of pure color that create volume and dynamism. It is a painterly style rich in texture and movement, typical of the post-Romantic 19th century. A wonderful work that transports us to the carefree, leisurely atmosphere of 18th-century nobility. If you love lively scenes, you simply cannot miss adding this painting to your collection. It is a magnificent work of art sure to captivate your guests!
The painting comes with a wooden frame featuring an interplay of gold and brown tones that perfectly enhances the artwork.
