This impressive vintage statue depicts Zhenwu Emperor (also known as Xuantian Shangdi), a powerful Daoist deity associated with the north, martial prowess, and the control of water. Crafted from heavy bronze with a rich, gilded finish, the statue features exceptional high-relief, repoussé, and chased detailing, accented with vibrant polychrome paint.
The deity is portrayed standing in a commanding, heroic posture atop a large tortoise. He has a serene yet stern face with a long black beard, framed by flowing red ribbons and a celestial scarf. He wears a detailed suit of scale armor over flowing robes, painted in vibrant shades of blue, green, and red. His right hand holds a sword diagonally across his chest, while his left hand extends outward.
He stands upon the back of a large, gilded tortoise, whose head is raised. A large, silver-colored snake coils around the tortoise, its head rising to the right of the deity—a classic pairing representing the "Dark Warrior" (Xuanwu) of the north. The entire composition rests on a rectangular, textured gold base. The front of the base is inscribed with four characters, which read "玄天上帝" (Xuantian Shangdi). The back of the base features another inscribed panel with characters. This powerful and substantial piece is perfect for a home altar, meditation space, or as a striking focal point in a collection of Asian art.
