Gorgeous large-scale hand-carved verdite rhinoceros sculpture by master sculptor, James Tandi. Tandi was a classical master Shona sculptor famous for his highly detailed representations of African wildlife. He worked using traditional hand tools - hammer and chisel - followed by meticulous wet-sanding and hand polishing.
This amazing and beautiful piece is carved from verdite, a rare, semi-precious hardstone known for its emerald hue. Because of its hardness (ranking high on the Mohs hardness scale) only master carvers could work in verdite. The piece is quite heavy and is one of Tandi's larger works measuring 17” Long x 8” Tall x 5 1/2” Wide.
This piece is in excellent structural condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. There is a small light scratch on one side that is negligible on a piece this size and barely noticeable.
