Beautiful pair of vintage Mexican red clay terracotta sculptures inspired by the ancient Pre-Columbian ceramic traditions of Nayarit, Western Mexico.
These striking hand-formed figures depict a seated male and a kneeling female, featuring elaborate ceremonial jewelry, expressive facial features, traditional body ornamentation, and beautifully preserved red, cream, and black painted finishes.
Their distinctive sculptural forms and rich earthy colors are reminiscent of the ancient Lagunillas and Chinesco ceramic traditions of Nayarit.
Acquired in Mexico approximately 55 years ago, around 1971, and preserved in the same private collection ever since.
These are wonderful examples of Mexican folk artistry and Pre-Columbian-inspired decorative sculpture, with exceptional character and visual appeal.

The pair consists of a large seated male figure and an unusual anthropomorphic feline/jaguar mythological figure with an oversized collar and pendant. The sculptures appear to be 20th-century Mexican interpretations/reproductions inspired by ancient West Mexican ceramic traditions, particularly the Nayarit/Jalisco region. They feature hand-modeled forms with red, ochre, black, and cream surface decoration and intentionally aged/patinated finishes. These are substantial statement pieces with wonderful presence and would work beautifully in a Southwestern, Mexican, Spanish Colonial, eclectic, or tribal-art interior. stands not included Free local delivery Nationwide delivery: $750 optional less
