An exceptional Swedish brass candelabra by renowned metalsmith and designer Lars Holmström (1894–1959), produced at his workshop in Arvika, Sweden.
Holmström established his own workshop in 1921 and became one of the notable figures within Swedish metalwork during the interwar period. Working primarily in brass, bronze, copper and silver, he developed a distinctive vocabulary characterized by strong architectural forms, refined proportions and meticulous craftsmanship. Holmström was also closely connected to the important craft community surrounding Arvika and was among the founders of Arvika Konsthantverk.
His work received international recognition during the 1920s. At the influential 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris—the exhibition that gave Art Deco its name—Holmström presented Swedish metalwork including brass chandeliers and candlesticks as well as works in silver.
This candelabra is a particularly expressive example of Holmström’s approach to metalwork. Executed in brass, the composition combines a sculptural silhouette with carefully balanced proportions and beautifully worked details. The restrained ornamentation and emphasis on material and craftsmanship place the piece firmly within the sophisticated Swedish design tradition of the period.
The naturally aged brass surface has developed a rich, warm patina that gives the piece considerable depth and character. Rather than diminishing the object, the traces of age emphasize the handmade quality of the metalwork and its history.
Holmström’s objects work particularly well in contemporary interiors, where the warmth and sculptural presence of the brass provide a striking contrast to more minimal architecture and furnishings.
A rare and highly decorative example of early 20th-century Swedish metalwork, equally compelling as a functional candelabra or as a sculptural object.
