Swedish furniture design of the 1940s introduced softer silhouettes, combining traditional craftsmanship with a growing interest in comfort and organic forms. This three-seater sofa by Berga Möbler reflects that transition through its generous proportions and sculpted profile.
Established in 1896 in Berga, Småland, Berga Möbler became known for furniture combining traditional woodworking with the emerging language of Scandinavian modernism.
A broad, slightly reclining backrest is divided into three upholstered sections, echoed by the three-part seat below. Rounded armrests curve gently outwards before descending into the continuous upholstered frame. The original honey-beige mohair lends the sofa a warm appearance, with subtle variations in tone as light moves across its surface. Delicate corded piping outlines the cushions and emphasises the rhythm of the upholstery.
Beneath the generous upholstered body, sculpted wooden legs introduce a contrasting element. Their outward inclination and rounded feet give the sofa an almost playful character, lifting its substantial volume above the floor. The uninterrupted back follows a gentle curve, allowing the piece to be positioned freely within a room rather than solely against a wall.
The balance between generous upholstery and carefully shaped wooden details gives this sofa its distinctive identity. Its proportions and restrained colour make it particularly suited to a living room, library or interior combining vintage and contemporary furniture.
The original mohair upholstery has been professionally cleaned and retains its characteristic texture. Minor signs of age and wear are visible, particularly along the lower upholstered edges, consistent with the sofa's vintage character. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
