A study in proportion and craftsmanship, this set of six dining chairs from Brescia, Italy, dates to the 1960s and is attributed to Fausto Bontempi. Their architectural wooden frames, combined with the warmth of the original brown upholstery, reflect an approach to Italian furniture design in which construction becomes an integral part of the aesthetic.
Each chair is constructed from solid wood, with four straight legs and an open backrest that emphasises the clarity of its structure. The most distinctive feature lies in the construction of the uprights, where narrow wooden elements create a layered, cross-shaped profile. This detail introduces a subtle rhythm to the otherwise restrained geometry.
Horizontal stretchers connect the legs beneath the seat, providing structural support and reinforcing the linear composition. The upholstered backrest is suspended between the rear uprights, leaving an open section between the back and seat. Its rectangular shape echoes the proportions of the seat cushion, establishing a balanced relationship between wood and fabric.
The original brown upholstery has a soft, velvety texture that contrasts with the polished wooden surfaces. Together, these materials give the chairs a warm appearance without compromising their architectural character.
Attributed to Fausto Bontempi, the set reflects the interest in structural clarity and functional design associated with Italian furniture of the 1960s.
The six chairs form a cohesive ensemble, particularly suited to a dining room where their repeated vertical lines and understated proportions can be appreciated.
The chairs remain in good vintage condition, with signs of wear consistent with their age and use. The original upholstery show surface wear. It can go for another round if needed but reupholstery is advised. The wooden frames retain minor marks and variations in their finish. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
